A small sphere of cracked earth rests in the salt holding the memory of my care in creating it. The process of the sculpting the dirt is meditative and silent. Slowly adding dust to the outer surface of the small hand-sized sphere until the moisture is slowly absorbed. This is an act of dwelling. I am acutely aware of my presence and my mark upon the dirt. The cracks in the sphere emerge from the salt drinking up the last traces of moisture from within its core.
Whether wood, charcoal, dirt, or salt the material holds memory of the mark that engenders a capacity of tension between the mediums. These phenomena correlate together similar to the horizon giving presence to the space that fills the void. The tension is the collection of experiences the viewer projects within the phenomena of the artwork. These material phenomena contain memories of experience, a trace, not unto themselves but in the context of the viewer. The viewer fills the space and thus completes the aesthetic quality of the artwork.
