Bethel Bethel Bethel (Detail) Bethel
Bethel
When the viewer climbed to the top of the ladder he/she was able to look through the sculpted hole into a black space. However the black space was not a space at all but rather a black reflection. The phenomenon of their reflection gave viewer conscious awareness to his/her presence on the ladder and in effect allowed the viewer to be aware of their presence in the context of the phenomenon. This is a threshold. The liminal space between the viewer and the phenomenon is where the emergent presence exists filling the space between. In “Bethel” the viewer’s perception was reaching out toward the image in the phenomenon and the phenomenon was reflecting back.
